Individual counselling, or psychotherapy, involves establishing a therapeutic alliance between an individual and a trained counsellor exploring together the source of challenges and harmful perspectives. With the counsellor’s guidance, specialized techniques can help gain insight leading to a better understanding of oneself. From here, coping strategies and exercises can be learned to help deal with and eventually overcome many common symptoms such as grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse and more.
Quite often clients struggle with several challenges at the same time, and these are usually interlinked, making it very difficult to deal with alone. As our challenges affect the relationships we have with others and vice versa, understanding the social context of clients is also critical. A counsellor can help to unravel these complexities so that clients can begin to feel more in control of their lives again and begin to see progress toward having the sort of life they want to live.
